Microsoft boss calls for EU structural funding reform – theparliament.com

I came across this coverage of a speech by Microsoft Europe’s chairman, Jan Muehlfeit.

Jan is drawing attention to the need to use the EU’s structural funds to develop digital skills across the EU in order to ensure future competitiveness and innovation within the region.  It’s a great point.  Too often state funds have gone towards propping up legacy industries (who have a big, influential voice) rather than ensuring that the future is secured.  The world is getting still flatter and emerging economies are skilled, hungry and competitive.  By contrast, the west debates, tugs its collective beard, wrestles with potentially enormous macro-economic consequences and does very little.  By international standards, Europe (including the UK) is expensive, under-skilled and over-legislated.
