Half an Hour?–Still too long, still too costly

Coverage on the BBC (and presumably elsewhere) highlights how three quarters of UK workers have commutes of less than 30 minutes (Full report from the Office for National Statistics, here)

The findings mostly support the obvious assumptions: workers in London travel longer and are less likely to travel by car; those who travel longest, tend to earn more.

More interesting is to consider the potential impact of not making the commute.  As the Telework Research Centre found recently, working from home just two days per week would yield a 20 per cent increase in productivity and consequent reductions in environmental impact.
