The Bring Your Own Computer (BYOC) and related “consumerisation of IT trends are interesting for freelancers, especially interim managers.  Most sovereign professionals would, I suspect, prefer to use their own familiar and “of required spec” equipment given the choice.  And, of course, the IR35 tax regulations use provision of own equipment as one of its tests of independence.

The reality, however, has often been that interims, working on a long project in close quarters with an established team and requiring access to internal tools and information, have been required to either use standard issue company kit, or even worse submit their treasured tools to the hands of corporate IT for compliance tests.

BYOC promises much for organisations, enabling as it does truly flexible working and happier, more productive staff.  It is often argued that individuals have more up to date, more powerful PC and phone equipment at home than they are required to use at work. 

However IT departments often blanche at the security ad support implications of such a policy, especially if not implemented well.
