Interim Management and the Portfolio Career

Barrie Hopson, co-author (with Katie Ledger) of the excellent And What Do You Do? has posted some thoughts on interim management as a component of a portfolio career, over on his blog.

To my mind, and in my experience, the two are perfect partners, especially when you take a long view of what makes a portfolio career.  There is sometimes a tendency to consider a portfolio career as the basket of activities which make up a typical week.  I think it is more illuminating – and liberating – to take a perspective across a typical year.

I may spend six months working “full-on” for a client but then I have a few months where I write, do not for profit work and enjoy other activity streams.

Interim management and portfolio careers: a perfect complement.
