The Myth of Work-Life Balance, John Beeson, HBR

John Beeson, on the HBR Blog, has a great post on the “Myth of Work-Life Balance”.

He notes that, for senior managers intent upon the C-suite, work-life balance is really a myth and they must instead look to personal organisation and precious slivers of relaxation to survive.  Such slivers may be a regular walk in the park; listening to jazz in a darkened room or hammering a racing car round the track.

The same is true for sovereign professionals.  Although many people go independent to escape the politics and stresses of corporate life, the freelance life can be even more – although differently – stressful.  Often the freedom of being a solopreneur, with no corporate structure or boundaries, brings its own stress making personal management even more important and those slivers of relaxation even more precious.

For me, it’s meditation and music.
