With this witch-hunt, the devil is in the detail – PCG’s John Brazier

John Brazier of the PCG hits out at the current public sector witch-hunt that is seeing genuine interim managers being pressurised, castigated and even having their projects terminated, as appears to be the case with Jon Seddon and Paul Brown at the Office for Nuclear Regulation.

In a well-balanced piece, Brazier observes that the freelance sector currently contributes £21 billion to the UK economy.

There seems a sad inevitability about the public sector reacting frantically to ill-informed press headlines rather than defending the flexibility, agility and value that interim managers bring.  Interim managers require no long-term, benefit-laden employment contracts, just a short-term commitment to provide the required expertise for the required period: expertise on demand.

It would be nice to see Danny Alexander supporting this growth area rather than presiding over an apparent witch-hunt.

After all, David Cameron said just three months ago:

“This Government recognises the valuable contribution that freelancers make to the economy and, as more and more people choose to join your ranks, you have all our support.”
