Write Tight

Write tight.

Paint an entire scene in a sprinkling of tightly constrained syllables.

“Crickets are chirpin’, the water is high
There’s a soft cotton dress on the line hangin’ dry”

“Time takes a cigarette
And puts it in your mouth”

“She only sleeps on planes”

“Two cars parked on the over-pass
Rocks hit the water like broken glass”

“Cheek bones like geometry and eyes like sin
And she’s sexually enlightened by Cosmopolitan”

Lots to learn from rock lyrics where the constraints of rhyme, rhythm and idiom often result in sparse beauty.

(And, of course the above are: Bob Dylan (Man in the Long Black Coat); David Bowie (Rock and Roll Suicide; Warren Zevon (Suzie Lightning); Tom Petty (Even The Losers) and Lloyd Cole (Perfect Skin)).
