The copywriter as digital nomad?
Fancy working from an apartment looking out on the mountain you’re going to climb just as soon as you’ve submitted that second draft? Or over an espresso in a sun-kissed Venetian piazza?
Here’s an interesting piece on the growing number of cross-border digital nomads. It comes from cross-border payments specialist FXC Intelligence.
Isn’t this at odds with the recent news from Amazon, JP Morgan, WPP, etc.?
I don’t think so. Many large organisations are seeing lower productivity as a result of working from home. They’re struggling with onboarding and training new staff, particularly junior staff and especially in culture and the other critical skills that are traditionally learned by example, observation and osmosis. They may also be struggling to justify the high cost of empty office space, but sunk costs are a lousy way to make decisions.
Either way, I think though the population of true digital nomads will continue to grow amongst freelancers and those with portable, in-demand and high-level skills. These are a tiny proportion of the workforce. They’re typically highly experienced and self-managing so can side-step many organisational needs.
If you feel the urge to trade your Costa or Nespresso for something more authentic, this is worth a read…
