Gotham: older than you thought

Almost despite myself (and thanks largely to teenage son), I’ve been enjoying Gotham, the TV series that gives the back-story to Batman and his Detective / Captain / Commissioner Gordon.

I always knew, or suspected, that Batman’s Gotham City was a thinly veiled version of New York.

Inky Fool (whose first book, Etymologicon, I’m in the middle of) gives us the back story to Gotham itself.

Perhaps it’s common knowledge in the US, but I had know idea that Gotham preceded the Dark Knight by a couple of centuries.
