The Freelance Economy–Business on Main

US Small Business community, Business on Main, carries a piece by Rieva Lesonsky on the Future of Work.

Drawing on research by the Kauffman Foundation (“Starting Smaller, Staying Smaller: America’s Slow Leak in Job Creation”), the article observes how a marked decline in “job creation” has been fully off-set by a corresponding growth in the numbers of self-employed.  The net result is a  more agile, flexible, “expertise on demand” economy.

The report also includes reflections from Dan Pink on his prescient 2001 book, Free Agent Nation and observes that objective commentary and deeper understanding are both hampered by the lack of good data: the US Department of Labour does not count freelance entrepreneurs in their job stats.
