Outsource neither Assets nor Issues

A thoughtful piece on Outsourcing in the Schumpeter column of week’s Economist

The problem is not with outsourcing per se, but often with the contracting and management of outsourcing agreements.  As a consequence, rather than turning away from outsourcing, firms are writing smaller, shorter deals and need to be much clearer about their core competences.

Outsourcing, of course, is the term usually used for the large-scale version of what many organisations are now also doing on a small, individual scale: focusing on a relatively small core of strategically important experts and skilled leaders / managers while using expertise-on-demand freelancers, interim managers and contractors to provide flexibility, agility, elasticity and deep expertise in areas which are either non-core or non-continuous.
